Since 1925, Community Missions has served the Niagara community. While needs have always been present, the past 15 years has seen a tremendous increase in demand for the Mission’s services.
According to recent census numbers, 23.7% of Niagara Falls’ residents live below the poverty line, compared to 14.2% of those living in New York and 12.5% nationally.
Niagara Falls’ median household income registers just $48,535, compared to $82,095 state-wide and $77,719 nationally.
Today, nearly one quarter (23.7%) of residents in the city of Niagara Falls live below the poverty line, including 37% of children within the city.
The chart above shows the steady increase in demand for Crisis Housing over the past several years, totaling a 161% increase over that time. Crisis Housing includes those staying in the Emergency Housing Shelter, Mark’s Place (HIV/AIDS Residence), Parole Re-Entry, and Code Blue.
The chart above shows the increased demand for meals provided by the Mission over the past 13 years. During that time, demand has more than doubled overall, while spiking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
